This program was written on Cisco Systems' time. They have however agreed to release it under the GPL for a number of reasons that all boil down to support. Cisco knows that all this software that I write for their print system is a potential support liability if I were to leave. However, if they allow me to release the software to the print system, I will be forced to:

  1. Write better code that can be compiled by pretty much anyone
  2. Write good documentation that can be picked up by someone from outside Cisco or new to the Cisco environment and make sure that
There is also the benefit that this software will be more fully tested which will expose potential problems. This has already saved my butt one time when a person trying out this program discovered the fact that --languages crashes HP 5M/N printers.
Also it makes it more likely that they will be able to hire someone who has experience working with my code.
Finally there is the hope that other people will contribute some code as well.
